We’re not anti-social; we’re just differently social. – Susan Cain.
‘How are you doing?’ he asked her though they had not spoken in years
‘I am fine’, she replied rather reluctantly. She wondered why he was messaging her.
‘So do you party a lot? He further questioned.
‘Err… No’, she said rolling her eyes in her mind’s eye.
‘Why would you message someone after a long while and ask the stupid question’, she thought and decided against talking to him in the future.
‘So what do you now do for fun?’ he interrupted her thoughts
She read the message and left it unanswered.
‘What a stupid statement’, I said with irritation when she told me about it
‘What did he mean by what do you now do for fun?’
‘Does it mean your life is boring if you don’t party? See me see trouble o’,
I said to my friends being dramatic in the Nigerian way
So this is for us
For those of us that will rather stay home than go out to party
People like me that prefer silence to noise
People like me that will rather watch Grey’s Anatomy than dress up for a party we know we will later regret going for.
Atimes we do dress up and go clubbing because our friends won’t let us rest,
They will keep going on and on about how we need to chill out sometimes
‘Excuse me, I do chill out a lot infact’, I would protest
And they would roll their eyes.
‘Reading a novel or watching a movie alone like a sad girl in your room is not chilling’, they would say with irritation
But who says it is not chilling.
I enjoy my own company!
I enjoy my own type of music
So you think I am a ‘kill joy’ because 30 minutes into a party,
I give you signs that I am ready to go.
Can you really blame me?
Pretending I am enjoying the party saps my energy
I would rather have a small gathering with friends that I know
Than go out to a crowded place with drunk people
And guys trying to grab my ass or boob
I can even go out with friends and strangers, just not a crowd
Just not strangers that stink and want to ‘tap that’.
So not drinking beer and spirit makes me a dulling babe?
You don’t say!
Darling, my taste buds just like sweet things.
It likes red wine though.
So this is for us
This is for us that don’t feel insulted when we are referred to as introverts
We don’t see it as a curse and one of the worst things that can happen to a man
Because we understand being an introvert does not mean we are sad or we don’t have friends
It doesn’t mean we don’t like going out
It just means we like existing in a depth of solitude a lot
It means we choose who and what we spend our time on because we know how valuable time is
It just means we don’t need to have a large circle of friends to feel alive
Just the right number of friends is enough
It means we like doing things that are meaningful
We will rather have deep conversations than shallow ones,
And this doesn’t make us snobbish or old.
It doesn’t mean, like I sometimes do that we don’t spend time with friends talking about things that add no meaning to our lives
It doesn’t mean we are always serious people,
And we don’t know how to live and laugh
It doesn’t mean we don’t sometimes listen to noise that people call music,
when we just need to let loose and dance
We just prefer the kind of songs that make sense like Iyeoka’s music *(you should really listen to she doesn’t know her beauty).
Being an introvert doesn’t mean we are boring people
We can actually be very crazy people, dance shamelessly even on the road,
Laugh about absolutely nothing; make up silly jokes like my friend, Derin
It just means we are more comfortable around friends and family.
Not sharing our lives publicly doesn’t mean we are secretive
It just means we like our privacy
We don’t have to tell the world when we want to use the toilet,
Or when we have a new boo
So this is for us
We have to remember to come out of our comfort zone once in a while,
Go out with strangers and just chill
For the introverts out there, wishing they were extroverts
You have to remember you are you,
And being an introvert is not the worst thing in the world
Infact, it is a blessing
So build your self esteem and be comfortable being who you are
For others that think being an introvert is a disorder and a social wrong,
Allow us occupy our space peacefully.
Same way we allow you occupy yours peacefully
Allow us see the world in the beautiful way that we do.
Enjoy the peace that comes with silence,
though our minds are always bustling with ideas.
