I was in the car, late at night thanks to Lagos traffic. It was mightily dark and I was seriously fighting sleep. My body was begging me to sleep, but my mind was demanding I stayed awake and I obeyed my mind. I obeyed my mind because Lagos drivers are crazy. It was also very dark and I just did not trust the driver enough to take me home safely, regardless of my mum’s loud prayer to God that He should get us home safely. I just felt it was necessary I watched the road with him and indirectly drive with him because I love my life and I still have a long way to go in life. My spirit dropped the question of where my trust flew to and I remembered the lovely song that I sing so passionately. I can’t remember the name but I remember “spirit, lead me where my trust is without borders” by hillsong. It is not only about trusting God to take me home safely that my trust is with borders, it’s with borders for so many other things and I am more than sure I am not alone. So now, I will tell us why we cannot afford to let our trust be with borders when it comes to God.
I am fully aware of the fact that not trusting God makes you and I worry unnecessarily. Why worry when God is capable of keeping those that trust Him in perfect peace? (Isaiah 26: 3 – 4). I recently fell in love with Deuteronomy 32:11 – 12, the bible says “he was like an eagle hovering over its nest, overshadowing its young, then spreading its wings, lifting them into the air, teaching them to fly. God alone led him, there was not a foreign God in sight. (MSG).The scripture was talking about how God found Jacob and transformed him. If you read further down, you will see how God took care of him. I like to believe God took care of him like that because Jacob did not depend on himself to take care of himself. He let go and let God. God found him in the wilderness which can signify a very dry period in his life. Remember it was the same Jacob that stole his brother, Esau’s birthright. He prospered but was afraid to return to Esau because he feared for his life. He made this known to God and God told him he would go before him and melt his brother’s heart. With that confirmation from God, he decided to go ahead and indeed he found favour in his brother’s sight.
We don’t tell God because we don’t trust him enough to fix it. We tell God but do not wait for a confirmation because we think our timing is more accurate and we do not trust the ancient of days timing. We tell God and wait for a confirmation, but do not follow the instructions God gives because we think it’s absurd forgetting our wisdom is foolishness in the sight of God. All these have to do with trust issues. Jacob was in a wilderness and God totally changed his story, why won’t we trust him to do the same? David said since I was young and now I am old, I have never seen the Lord changeth. He was the same one that said since I was young and now I am old; I have never seen the righteous forsaken. Like Tyre Tribbett sang, it is the same God right now and same God back then.
You will be plunged into an unfamiliar world just like the eagle when you have taken enough baby milk and it’s time for you to start eating bones. You might think you are going into that world alone, but the truth is we are never alone when we have God. The Holy Spirit is with and in us. God’s eyes are roundabout the earth (2 Chronicles 16:9). So he is like the eagle hovering over you and he steps in to lift you from whatever situation when it’s time. He allows you go through some situations so you can be equipped with some lessons needed for the future. He doesn’t leave you alone because he still instructs you through the Holy Spirit who is your comforter. You are not an orphan as God explicitly told his disciples when he was leaving that he will not leave them as orphans, but will send the spirit of truth who will teach them all things and bring to their remembrance all things. But you can choose to be an orphan by not listening to the Holy Spirit because you don’t trust him enough to lead you and that’s when you start making the Holy Spirit mute because who likes been ignored perpetually? Always remember Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who refused to bow to the gods of Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 3: 1 – 30). Their trust was without borders and God showed up in a profound way.
Prayer: “O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee”. (Psalm 25:20).
