Why your prayers are not being answered.

When we open our mouths to pray or when we pray in our hearts, it’s not us praying. It’s not us talking. It’s not us asking because we do not know what to pray for. We do not know how to pray. We utter mere words, but Jesus, who is our intermediary transforms those words that they become eternal words, words that can be understood by the father. The Holy Spirit breathes in us and when we open our mouths, it is not us, but the Holy Spirit working and asking for us. We do not know how to do anything, like Paul said, we are not adequate on our own. We get our sufficiency from the fountain that never runs dry. So if it is the Holy Spirit helping us to pray and God is our intermediary, interceding on our behalf at the father’s feet, why then are our prayers not being answered.

The simple answer is your prayers are not being answered because the requests you made were not made through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The flesh cannot understand the things of the spirit, neither can it speak the language of the spirit. The flesh is too weak to enter into the supernatural realm and the flesh is inherently selfish, it seeks its own good and asks for things to enhance it. When the flesh is enhanced, what space is there for the spirit to occupy? In James 4: 3, the bible says ‘you ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it upon your lusts.’ So that is one major reason why your prayer won’t be answered because you asked operating from the realm of the flesh. I said the realm of the flesh because the spirit cannot make you ask amiss. In Romans 8 : 27, the bible says: “and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God”. So the spirit does not ask in a vacuum. The spirit asks according to the will of God, so what you get will be the will of God and we all know when something is the will of God, it can never go wrong. If you go on a journey following the road map God has given you, you go on that journey confidently. You sing hymns and radiate with joy because you know you can never get lost.

“…. For we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” ( Romans 8:20). There is the holy trinity: God the father; God the son and God the Holy Spirit. To be able to operate from the realm the trinity operates from, you have to know Jesus who is the same as the father and the spirit; they are one. If you do not know the trinity very well by reading and meditating upon the words of God, it is impossible to have a working relationship with the trinity. If you don’t have a working relationship with the trinity, there is no way you can make full use of the trinity and because you are not one of the sheep recognised by Jesus, the shepherd, he cannot really intercede on your behalf. Jesus while talking to His disciples said: “my sheep hear my voice.” (John 10: 27). If you are not of the sheep, you cannot hear the voice of the trinity. You operate in the flesh and Jesus said: “God is a spirit and those that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4: 24). You don’t have the sensitivity to hear the voice of the spirit. So even if the spirit is telling you what to ask from the father, you won’t be able to hear or understand because the flesh cannot accommodate the spirit, just like the spirit cannot operate in the flesh. So you are deaf in the realm of the spirit and fully alive in the realm of the flesh. Therefore, you ask and you do not get. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh …. If your mind is not filled with the things of the spirit, your heart is not full of the word of God, your treasure is here on earth where moth and rusts can destroy it, how do you think you can speak the language of the spirit?

And all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose – Romans 8: 28

God has a plan for everyone. He made you for a reason which is one of your purposes. An important purpose for which God made you for is so you can have fellowship with Him and like the angels, always singing Holy, its so you can sing praises to His Holy name. God is such a kind God that He never makes any bad product because the products reflect the manufacturer. If you call yourself one of the products of God, it is imperative that you act like Him and perform all the functions your manufacturer created you for. You live not for you, but for God because when you behave like your father, people want to know who your father is. Your life is preaching Christ and you are obeying his words that says: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in Heaven” (Mathew 5: 16). I am diverting… that’s a topic for another day.

God makes all things work together for your good and he orders the steps of the righteous so you should know when you pray and do not receive, that is if your heart is right with God, there is a reason. God told us in Jeremiah 29: 11 that we know the plans he has for me, plans to prosper us and not to harm us. So God will not give you that thing even if you fit all the criteria because that thing will destroy you. You are a baby that should still be taking milk, but you start asking to crack bones when you do not have teeth strong enough for that. His plans are to prosper you and maybe you are not getting that thing yet because something better is on the way. He needs you to be patient because your patience will produce a bigger harvest.

Another reason why you would not receive is because of lack of faith. Faith is the bedrock of any and everything.

I should stop here. The topic of prayer is a rather broad one and this one is long as it is. I might write a second post. But for now, I hope you are blessed by this and I hope to see your contributions in the comment section.

Take time to thank God for all your unanswered prayers. One of the reasons why we are still standing is because of some of our unanswered prayers.

What about times when you feel like you really need a direction from God or a sign to go ahead with a decision and you can’t really tell what God wants you to do. Basically, when we are confused, what do we do?

Ene, like Frances rightly said, all the direction you will ever need is in the word of God. There is a word for everything as nothing is new to God. So if there is a problem, for example, He has already provided the solution to it in the Bible. You just have to find the scripture specific to what you are going through and that’s why we have the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can help to point you in the right direction.

Another thing you can do is be silent. Sometimes, we are so caught up with many things that we do not hear when God is speaking. So you dedicate time, maybe fast and be in a place of solitude so you can hear what God is saying.

I hope this was able to help. Thank you for reading 🙂

At Ene…one of the ways that God speaks to us is through His Word. so sometimes we may feel that God isn’t speaking but maybe it’s already clear in His Word…the question is have we taken out time to search the Word that can direct us out?

God doesn’t only speak by vision, dreams or the inner witness, Infact, all those must tally with the Word.
I’ll suggest that you take time out and study the Word, get to know what it says and let it guide you.
God may still speak audibly to your heart, but His Word is still always true.

Thank you so much for this Mayowa, it ticked all the boxes.
The place of prayer is so vast-so much so that no one post can deal with it…
The last paragraph resounded with me..thanking God for even our unanswered prayers because if we had allowed some of the things we wanted, we would be in a deep hole today – this was also said in a wonderful msg I listened to today.
I can’t wait to read more on this if you will expand on it…

Thank you for reading Frances and also for the insightful post you wrote on prayer.

Yes! Sometimes we feel God isn’t fair when He doesn’t answer some of our prayers, but later, if we are sensitive enough, we will see and thank Him for not answering those prayers. Prayer is such an essential part of life that it really can’t be fully explored in one post.
